ENTRANCES, PORCHES, AND STEPS <br />Guidebook <br />The majority of the houses in the district have either an open or a enclosed porch across the front or <br />on the side. Most porches have either gabled or hipped roofs or are covered by the main roof of the <br />house. A brick base with wood columns is common. <br />Required <br />Existing or original porches and steps, including <br />handrails, balusters, columns, brackets, tiles and roof <br />decorations shall be retained or replace with replicas <br />of the same design and materials when deteriorated <br />beyond repair. Porches and additions reflecting later <br />architectural styles._ and which are important to the <br />building's historical integrity shall be retained. <br />Recommended <br />When enclosing porches for heat conservation or for <br />other reasons, it should be done in a manner that does <br />not alter the architectural or historical character of the <br />building. <br />Prohibited <br />V0111 <br />-; <br />Porches and steps that are important to the building's style <br />may not be altered or removed. <br />Not Recommended <br />0.1 n14aC4V1C..J <br />_3 <br />Original porch details should not be replaced with materials representing a different period or style <br />from the original. <br />E. MECHANICAL SYSTEMS <br />The majority of the structures within the district have oil or gas heat, and have a single brick chim- <br />neys through the roof. Some houses have one or two window air conditioners. <br />Required <br />Required mechanical systems shall be placed in areas that will result in the least possible alteration <br />of the structural integrity and physical appearance of the building. <br />Recommended <br />Window air conditioners and exhaust fans should be installed at the rear or an inconspicuous side <br />window. Early mechanical systems, including early plumbing and lighting fixtures, should be uti- <br />lized whenever possible. <br />Prohibited <br />Holes shall not be cut through walls in areas that can be seen from the street to accommodate air <br />conditioners or other mechanical equipment. <br />Not Recommended <br />Exterior electrical and telephone cables should not be attached to the principle elevations of the <br />building. <br />Page 35 <br />
