JOHN LIVINGSTON: The roof on the Human Rights Building in Howard Park has deteriorated
and the city wants to replace the roof with slate. The slate they want to use on the roof is very
high quality slate. The building is a national landmark; therefore, this will have to go down state.
Karen advises me that we can send along a recommendation, right, Karen?
KAREN HAMMOND-NASH: Yes, this commission, if it chooses, can send along a
recommendation that either the project is approved and stating the reasons why, or that it not be
approved.
JOHN LIVINGSTON: We are going to do a hundred percent slate on the roof. Right now it has
an asphalt part on it and a slate part. Midland Engineering Company is going to do it, and I
know they do a first class job.
JOHN OXIAN: So you are going to do the whole roof with that type of slate?
JOHN LIVINGSTON: Yes, we are. It is called a black slate; however, it is actually grey in
color.
JOHN OXIAN: So, what does staff recommend?
KAREN HAMMOND-NASH: Staff would recommend that the commission adopt a resolution
in support of the project and also direct staff and to send a letter to the National Parks Service
and to the state historic preservation officers thus stating.
CATHERINE HOSTETLER: I so move.
JOANN SPORLEDER: Seconds the motion and it passes unanimously.
VII. ADJOURNMENT
CATHERINE HOSTETLER: Makes a motion to adjourn the meeting and it is unanimously
seconded.
MEETING ENDED AT 9:30 P.M.
13
