The permit states that three (3)
pear trees will be permitted, which Is the quantity that I asked them to approve. However, there is
approximately 122 linear feet along the tree -lawn and four (4) trees might be a betterspacing. I will
discuss this with Brent Thompson, Forester with the Department of Public Parks.
As I mentioned to you during our initial conversation, the Liddell's would prefer to plant pear trees.
Both the Callery and Bradford Pear trees grow to a mature height of 30-45 feet and a width/spread
of 20-30 feet. With a tree -lawn width of only 8 feet, their 8-12 inch mature growth caliper will space
nicely. They provide color in more than one season with early spring bloom (white flower) and
brilliant crimson -red fall color. Perhaps most important, pears are highly adaptable and can
tolerate typical urban conditions.
I have several concerns about the species of Ash, Oak and Elm that the HPC would recommend
for in-kind replacement. The existing tree -lawn does not provide enough space for their growth;
Ash trees are targeted for borers this upcoming summer; Oak tree leaves are very messy and
labor-intensive to pick up; Elm trees -will -always have the reputation of the widespread scourge of
Dutch __ elm disease which casts doubt about their future.
This particular tree -lawn has not had any trees planted in it for over fifteen years.
Thank you very much for your assistance. Please contact me should you have any qbestions.
Kindest regards,
ARCHITECTURE DESIGN GROUP, INC.
IVUi -:1.►wyu
William R.
