STAFF REPORT
CONCERNING APPLICATION FOR A
CERTIFIATE OF APPROPRIATENESS
Application Number: 2002-0822
Property Location: 1120 East Wayne Street.
Property Owner: Mr. & Mrs. Robert L. Miller, Jr.
Designation: Local Historic District — East Wayne Street
Rating: Contributing - 9
HISTORY
This is a garrison -style colonial revival built in 1935 for Lydia & James Naus. James Naus,
a 1916 graduate of Indiana Dental College, opened an office in the Farmers' Security Building in
1918. He married Lydia F. Miels, and they had a daughter and a son. Naus was a member of the
American & Indiana Dental Associations, the 1P District Dental Society, Delta Sigma Delta
Fraternity, Knights of Pythias, Kiwanis Club, and a Mason.
In 1955 the Nauses moved their home and Dr. Naus' office to 604 S. Eddy Street, and sold
this house to Leila & Tracy H. Madole, V.P. of sales for the South Bend Range Corporation.
In 1961, the Madoles sold the house to Barbara & Stephen Lobdell. Mr. Lobdell was
president of material Handling Equipment Co. At his death, he left the house to Barbara. She sold
the house to Mr. & Mrs. Miller in 1987.
RECOMMENDATION -
The owners, forgetting to obtain a C. of A., hired a contractor to replace their roof gutters.
The contractor did, removing a piece of wooden dormice molding in the process. The resulting
gutters fail to catch the rainwater. The owner, belatedly, has sought a C. of A.
The contractor, although he performed the job according to bid specifications, has kindly
offered to replace the non-functional gutters with a more effective gutter, pending HPC approval.
Staff feels unable to make a recommendation before seeing the cornice molding, which is
supposed to be available for inspection Monday.
