Ina
Bead board wooden siding identical to the original is readily available in local lumber yards,
as are all the other materials that would be needed for repairing or rebuilding this garage in its
original form. However, vinyl bead board siding is also available. As the only rational explanation
for the present condition of the property is desperate poverty of the owner, the HPC may feel it
necessary to allow a departure from the usual standards in order to control costs. If the present siding
can be retained with the replacement of selected boards, that may be the cheaper alternative.
However, if total residing is required, then beaded vinyl siding is available cheaper than wood.
Staff notes that in May, the owner of a property neighboring this one requested and received
a C of A for the restoration of her ship -lap wood sided garage, restoring its original roof profile and
retaining its original sliding carriage door. Work on that garage is proceeding, and it will soon look
very nice.
I would recommend that the HPC grant a C of A specifying
(1) that the roof, eaves, and soffit be rebuilt in their existing profile,
(2) that both the overhead and the service door be repaired or replaced with doors of
the owners choice,
(3) that the bead board siding be repaired or replaced in kind, minus the 1960 bump -
out,
(4) that the plain cornice and corner boards be retained or duplicated, and
(5) that the boards over the two window openings be removed and the windows
repaired or replaced with windows of the same size, shape, profile, and dimensions as
the original.
