ARCHITECTURE
DESIGN GROUP
June 6, 2003
Karen Hammond -Nash, Director
Historic Preservation Commission
of South Bend and St. Joseph County
125 South Lafayette Blvd.
South Bend, IN 46601
RE: Jones Residence
1335 East Wayne Street North
South Bend, IN 46615
Dear Karen:
Please allow this letter to act as the "Description of Proposed Work" at this site. Our
design is based on our identification of this colonial house style as Georgian.
Proposed Demolition Work:
1. Remove the existing metal awning above the north rear entry door.
2. Remove the existing windows in both the north Dining and Kitchen (See Floor
Plan — These openings will be replaced with a pair of French -style doors and a
bay window respectively).
3. Remove the existing north rear entry door and two adjacent windows (Dining
and %Z Bath) where new Portico/Entry addition attaches.
4. Remove the existing metal railing at rear north entry.
5. Remove the existing asphalt shingles in their entirety from house down to
existing decking.
Proposed Construction Work:
1. Add Screened Porch (12x12) and Entry Portico (10x12); Additions will be
wood frame with painted wood wall panels and 4" exposure lap siding — paint
color will match existing house trim; Wood trim detailing will compliment the
existing trim; Wood columns will compliment the existing pilasters from the
broken pediment at the front of the house (See photographs).
2. Add shed roof (Design for the additions is meant to be reminiscent of the pent
roof which was a typical middle -colonies feature); New roof shingles will be
25 -year asphalt laminated type; Eave will transition into architrave which is
922 E.
