Staff cannot recommend approval of the demolition of the brickwork, flat -arches, stone keystones,
and stone lintels surrounding the:
1.) Existing north and west Dining Room windows,
2.) North Kitchen window,
3.) North window adjacent to the back door,
4.) And the back door.
The windows with their decorative elements are key features of the home's historic character. See
above paragraphs for more information. Staff generally recommends the reused of original materials
and elements in the proposed plan. However, this will not be possible under the current proposal due to
the wood frame construction of the addition and the use of different window types rather than
replacement windows.
Staff cannot not recommend the approval of the construction the following proposed additions.
1.) Screened porch with shed roof,
2.) Entry portico and addition with shed roof,
3.) French doors,
4.) And the bay window with shed roof,
Staff has no opinion regarding the asphalt roof. It does not appear to be original to the residence.
Staff would be more willing to send a favorable recommendation of a proposal that retained and
exposed more of the brick exterior and more of the brick detailing (arch, lintel, and keystone) on the rear
of the Jones' residence. Staff would be willing to recommend approval of a proposal that included some
window changes (French doors, bays) if changes to the rear profile of the house were not so dramatic
and if the brick detailing were retained. Staff applauds the use of the pilasters as a design element and
suggests the design of a less intrusive "out -door room" that employs the pilasters.
