deteriorating neighborhood. Essentially, staff hopes that INDOT will attempt to reuse as much of US
3l's current road bed, employ access ramp designs that will gobble up less land compared to the large
clover leaf design, and spare as many structures as possible from demolition. HPC staff also hopes
INDOT will construct roadways that will attempt to balance respect for what already exists in a location
with future hopes for economic benefits and development.
For the following reasons, staff finds that Alternative F is a workable alternative for the
reconstruction of US 31:
1.) Reuse of most current US 31's right of way;
2.) Will not threaten the RR corridors and possible less intrusive reuse possibilities;
3.) Future development will occur along existing travel right-of-way and not have drastic
impact upon county landscapes;
4.) Retains entranceway into the city at Michigan Street, which may allow for possible
revival of the South Gateway District.
But alternative F is complicated by the presence of several historic structures and two local
landmarks.
Alternatives G, H & I
The following three alternatives, G, H, and I, move US 31 east of Lakeville and further into rural areas of
the county. All three enter St. Joseph County just west of Linden Road (a historic barn is located nearby)
and would travel diagonally northeast around Riddles Lake and toward Juniper Road. The proposed path
comes close to these rated structures:
Old Survey
Rating
Number
New Survey Number
11062
?
11011
141-339-85060 (QA)
11052
C/10
11051
S/11
11050
141-694-85047
Farmhouse & English
141-694-85048
141-694-85046
141-339-85061
Address
20471 Rockstroh Road
67518 Kenilworth Road
19101 Pierce Road
19022 Pierce Road
18518 Pierce Road
18601 Pierce Road
18318 Pierce Road
67475 Kenilworth Road
Title
Rating
Farmhouse & Barn
S/11
Residence
C/10
Residence
C/10
Schoolhouse
C/10
Isaac Sells Farmhouse
S/11
Sweitzer Barn
C/10
Farmhouse & English
S/11
Bank Barn
S
Barn
C/10
Style Year
V
c. 1890
V
c. 1890
GrR/V
c. 1860
V
c. 1910
StV
c. 1890
Agri
c. 1900
Agri c. 1880/1910
Go Arch c. 1945
Alternative G then follows Juniper north as options H and I continue to the northeast. Option G then
curves to the west just south of Roosevelt Road. Between Roosevelt Road and Southlawn Cemetery
further north, option G would possibly hook into the existing path of US 31.
