<br />The housing stock along Pine Road differs from the Mulberry Road Concentration in that many of the
<br />houses exemplify the Stick vernacular style or seem to be simpler renditions of this style and are termed
<br />vernacular. The style dates these farmhouses to the 1880s and 1890s, which makes these homes almost a
<br />generation younger than those along Pine Road. Due to the number marshes that existed here, settlers
<br />may not have established farmsteads until drainage of the area could be accomplished. The area may not
<br />have blossomed agriculturally until the drainage occurred. Once the fertile soil could be tapped, the
<br />farmers would then have had the resources to build their new farmhouses and barns in the 1880s and
<br />1890s. The need for drainage and the later agricultural development could possibly account for the
<br />stylistic differences and younger housing stock along Mulberry Road. Near Roosevelt Road the age of
<br />the farmhouses increase and more Greek revivals are extant.

<br />Oak and Sumntion Trail Concentration
<br />The Sumption Trail Concentration in Greene Township has a number of farmhouses that date to the early
<br />pioneering years of St. Joseph County during the 1830s and 40s, including the George Sumption
<br />Farmhouse. Due to the early date of settlement in this area, many layers of housing construction are
<br />" Other farmhouses date to the 1890s and are examples of the vernacular style nearby this concentration that could also be linked to this concentration as well
<br />by style and by dating. These include: 12024, 12033,12032, 12021, 12008, 12007, and 12006.
