Lafayette <br />South Bend IN 46601 <br />Phone; 219-235-9798 <br />Fax: 219.235-9578 <br />Email: histodc@michiana.org <br />DO NOT FORGET YOUR COA <br />Please remember that if <br />you own a property with <br />in a Local Historic Dis- <br />trict or a Local Land- <br />mark, work which af- <br />fects the exterior of your <br />property (Le., main <br />buildings, outbuildings, <br />grounds, landscaping) <br />requires a Certificate of <br />Appropriateness (COA) <br />from the Historic Preser- <br />vation Commission be- <br />fore any work can com- <br />mence. <br />Routine periodic work <br />such as re -roofing with <br />similar materials and <br />removal of dead trees <br />may be approved by the <br />Commissions' Staff with- <br />out delay. Painting of <br />previously painted sur- <br />faces does not require a <br />COA. <br />Less routine or more ex- <br />tensive projects such as <br />window replacement or <br />construction of a room <br />addition require review <br />by the Historic Preserva- <br />tion Commission in a <br />Public Hearing and may <br />entail a delay of 10 to <br />45 days depending on <br />when the application is <br />received by the HPC Of- <br />fice. Call 235-9798 if <br />you have questions re- <br />garding whether your <br />proposed project re- <br />quires a COA and how to <br />have it reviewed. <br />Footnote to all owners, <br />the application fee for a <br />COA is $5.00 for all staff <br />reviewed applications <br />and $10.00 for Commis- <br />sion reviewed applica- <br />tions. Contact Staff for <br />meeting schedules and <br />application deadlines in <br />advance to expedite the <br />permit process. <br />
