Significantly, Dr. Mott was a founder and trustee of the church.
Mrs. Mott, remembers Ms. Doaks, worked in the church Soup Kitchen
and 'regularly helped with the day -to -day maintenance and upkeep
of the church in its early years. -
Reviewing the careers and successes of Dr. Mott and his wife, one
must recognize that much 6f "this..occurred _ in the 1940s,.50s, and
early 60s, years of blatant and hidden segregation and discrimina-
tion, in the medical community. For example, for many years
the hospitals refused to hire African - American nurses. Given these
and other obstacles, one can only marvel at what the Motts were able
to accomplish. Mr. Mott died in 1971 and Mrs. Mott in 1988.
We hope this letter will persuade the Commission of the importance
of the proposed landmark designation. The local chapter of the
NAACP has also expressed interest in this issue.
This proposal for a Local Historic Landmark will be presented to
the Board of the LaSalle Area Neighborhood Association at their
monthly meeting on April 20.
If we can be of further assistance, please contact us.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Thomas J.
