Re0ofution
of tfir
biotoric Breoerbation QContntiooion
of
boutb 35enb anb Saint 3'oomb Countp
Inbiana
At the April 15, 2002 Meeting of the Historic Preservation Commission of South
Bend and Saint Joseph County:
Whereas: This Commission is a Certified Local Government concerned with the
preservation of local history, and especially with the preservation of local landmarks
and local historic districts; and
Whereas: Edgewater Local Historic District in the City of South Bend is a primarily
residential neighborhood of about 80 homes and small businesses on the banks of the
Saint Joseph River; and,
Whereas: the Edgewater neighborhood lost most of the American Elm Trees lining
its streets and avenues during the Dutch elm blight of the 1960s, and replacement
forestry has been unplanned, sporadic and often unsuccessful up to this point,; and,
Whereas: The generosity of the Van Buren Foundation, in conjunction with the
Elm Research Institute, in contributing matching funds for the purchase of three
dozen native species, disease resistant, American Elm Trees, has enabled a planned
and collective replanting of these fine trees in the Edgewater Local Historic District.
Now Therefore: This Historic Preservation Commission is deeply grateful to the
kind philanthropy of the Van Buren Foundation for helping to restore an endangered
native species to one of our historic neighborhoods.
John H. Oxian, President
Mary Jane Chase, Treasurer
Martha Choitz
Gerald Ujdak, Vice President
Catherine Hostetler, Secretary
Richard Helmus
April 15 2002
Richard Morrison
