front yard is considered to begin along a line drawn even with the solid front wall of the
house.
For houses on curving streets that curve towards or around the house, and for
houses on street corners, the front yard is any part of the yard in front of a line drawn
along the outside back wall of the house straight over to the property lines on both sides
of the house.
The question of side yards only arises for houses on straight streets, on curving
streets that curve away from the house, or for houses on street corners, the side of the
house away from the corner. The side yard, in all of these cases, is the portion of the yard
that lies between the front and back yards, as defined above.
Pursuant to the request of Commission Member Richard Morrison, the staff of the
Historic Preservation Commission has prepared this written summary of Commission
Policy Regarding Residential Fences, for consideration by the Commission at its October
15, 2001 meeting.
