:,i
RECOMMENDATION
According to the City Survey a structures rating may be altered later for the reasons
mentioned above. This house meets two of those reasons, Le, additional research and
sensitive restoration. The staff has discovered that the original owner of this house was
Dr. Ryell Miller and his wife, Annie Shetterly Miller. Mrs. Miller was the daughter of
well-known South Bend resident, Christian Shetterly, for whom the plat is named. Dr.
Miller had his hands in various aspects of South Bend, he was an early dentist, later a
prominent lawyer and proprietor of the Miller Sash and Screen Factory. Dr. Miller was.
also active in the community as a prominent member of the I.O.O. F. lodge and as the
director of the Northern Indiana Historical Society. These well-known and respected
members of the community resided at this address until 1924.
The house has seen extensive restoration over the past few years, which has restored the
house to a more original state. The asbestos siding has been removed and the underlying'
clapboard siding has been restored as have the gable fish scale shingles and porches. The
owner has also removed the concrete stoop and replaced it with concrete steps and
appropriate railings. With the addition of a wonderful paint job, which punches out all of
the fine details of the house, the metamorphosis is complete.
With the new research knowledge and fine restoration work, this structure should be re -
rated to a significant 12.
