. STAFF REPORT
CONCERNING APPLICATION FOR A
CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS
Application Number: 2001-0510-2
Property Location: 803 N. Notre Dame (Park)
Property Owner: City of South Bend
Landmark or District Designation: LL
Rating: S/12
STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE/HISTORIC CONTEXT
The park located to the south and west of Fire House #7 was landscaped in 1915
with a simple fountain, evergreens and various flowers. The park was maintained for
many years by local residents before falling into disrepair twenty or so years ago. Some
of the original residences involved with the park were Bill Williams an electrician and his
brother Jack, a bricklayer and Jim Scott a local carpenter. The Fires Station and park are
currently being used by the Northeast Neighborhood Council. As of 1999, they have
begun an extensive restoration project for the building as well as the park.
RECOMMENDATION
The Preservation Guidelines for Local Landmarks follow the Rehabilitation Model.
Group B Standards
The applicant is requesting to install a boulder on the southeast corner of the park.
The boulder will be approximately 3 feet in diameter and will have the inscription
"Quigley Park", engraved on it. The Neighborhood Council is currently awaiting final
approval by the City of South Bend to pass a resolution, which would officially name the
park Quigley. Mr. Quigley was a prominent resident of the neighborhood for many
years; the park would be named in his memory.
The staff finds the application to be appropriate and recommends approval.
