STAFF REPORT <br />CONCERNING APPLICATION FOR A <br />CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS <br />Application Number: 2001-0606 <br />Property Location: 1329 E. Wayne So. <br />Property Owner: Patrick Doherty <br />Landmark or District Designation: LHD-EW <br />Rating: ' C/9 <br />STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE/HISTORIC CONTEXT <br />Prominent developers, Whitcomb & Keller built this H.R. Staff designed house <br />for Arthur and Adalaide Mortland in 1926. Arthur was born in Ohio and came to South <br />Bend in 1919 to manage a branch of the Edgerton Manufacturing Company, which <br />manufactured fruit baskets and fruit packing supplies. Mr. Mortland eventually became <br />the secretary and sales manager of the plant. Mr. & Mrs. Mortland resided at this address <br />until their deaths Arthur in 1934 at age 59 Adalaide in 1939 at age 62. The house was <br />inherited by their son, Frederick, who sold it in 1940 to Carl and Marie Johnson, an <br />aeronautical engineer for the Bendix Corporation. They lived here for eighteen years, <br />selling it in 1958 to his son, Carl Jr. Carl retained ownership until 1960 when he sold it <br />to Walter and Eleanor Fox, an osteologist. They resided there until 1965 when it was <br />sold to the current owners, Patrick and Marilyn Doherty. <br />RECOMMENDATION <br />The Preservation Guidelines for the East Wayne Local Historic District follow the <br />Rehabilitation Model. <br />Group B Standards <br />The applicant is requesting to install a rear yard deck. The new deck would be <br />one foot off the ground, approximately 18'x22' in size, it will abut the house but not <br />attach to it and will be made of cedar with typical square railing and members. The staff <br />finds the project to be with in the guidelines and recommends approval. <br />
