m
June 11, 2001
HISTORIC
LANDMARKS
FOUNDAnON OF
INDIANA
Northern Regional Office
Probst House
520 East Colfax Avenue
South Bend, Indiana 46617
219 232 4534
Fax: 219 232 5549
Mr. John Oxian
President
I Estoric Preservation of South Bend and St. Joseph County
South Bend, IN 46601
Re: National Register Nomination for the South Bend Remedy Building
Dear Mr. Oxian,
Enclosed you will find an application for nomination of the South Bend Remedy Company building
to the National Register as a historic resource in the West Washington National Register district. Let me
explain the reason for this nomination.
At previous meetings (2 to be exact) the HPC has acted on our request to approve the relocation of
the South Bend RemedyBuilding from 501 W. Colfax to 402 W. Washington. Those actions were required
due to procedural requirements mandated by the Indiana Division of Historic Preservation and the National
Park Service in order for the Remedy building to retain its listing on the National Register following the
relocation. We -had been working closely with the DHPA for the requirements in this matter as they had,
awarded a grant to the project.
In April, the Indiana Division of ITistoric Preservation and Archaeology notified us that the Remedy
building was not on the National Register at its current site. This despite the fact that it was listed in their
publication of sites and structures that are listed on the National Register. The Remedy building had been
listed as part of the downtown South Bend Multiple Resource district before its move. However, no-one
apparently followed up with the DHPA /NPS following the move in 1988 and the building was de -listed.
Now, in order for us to utilize the grant which they awarded to us for the project, we have to develop
a new national register nomination (enclosed) and get it re -listed at its current site at 501 W. Colfax.
Assuming that the Remedy building is again listed, we will also be required to come back to the HPC and
DHPA following the building's relocation to W. Washington and seek approval for the move in order to
maintain the new listing.
My sincere apologies for the extra time and effort that this has placed on you, your staff and fellow
commission members. A representative from my office will be present at the meeting to answer any
questions.
Si
Todd A. Zeiger
