27th and the other fronting 28th Street. These secondary entrances have slightly higher
pitched roofs then the smaller wings each ending in gables which front Vine Street.
These gables boast limestone parapets and very ornate triangular detailing made with
limestone highlights, yellow brick infill and soldier brick surrounds. Each entrance has
an ornate parapet with limestone caps, yellow brick infill and soldier brick surrounds.
The multi -paned wood doors and surrounds mirror the front entrance and are protected by
brick and limestone, arched porticos.
RECOMMENDATION
Based on the Historic Preservation Commission's Local Landmark Criteria's adopted by
the Common Council, -the site and structure at 2716 Vine Street has been recommended
to the Common Council for designation as a Local Landmark by the Historic
Preservation Commission.
The building and site meet four of the criteria:
1) Its character, interest, or value as part of the development, heritage, or culture of
the City of South Bend, St. Joseph County, the State of Indiana, or the United
States of America;
2) Its embodiment of elements or architectural design, detail, material or
craftsmanship which represents an architectural characteristic or innovation;
3) Its suitability for preservation;
4) Its identification with the life of a person or persons of historical significance.
The site and structure fulfill criteria #1 as the only remaining school that was original to
River Park, a town in Indiana, which ceased to exist in 1911. This school not only
educated the towns children it also became a center for neighborhood social events and
gatherings. It helps depict the growth of small towns and the eventual loss of these small
towns to sprawling cities.
The site and structure fulfill criteria #2 as excellent example of Gothic -Revival style
school with extremely ornate limestone and brick detailing. This structure is rated and
S/12 in the Indiana Historic Sites and Structures Inventory.
The site and structure fulfill criteria #3 by its integrity of original construction with no
significant alterations in the past 78 years.
The site and structure fulfill criteria #4 with its association to the citizens of River Park.
