NATIONAL REGISTER NOMINATION STAFF REPORT
PROPERTY South Bend Brewing Association
1636 Lincolnway West
South Bend, IN. 46628
OWNER Ethel Anderson
1636 Lincolnway West
South Bend, IN. 46628
STANDARDS
The nomination proposes placement of these buildings and site on the National Register
of Historic Places based on Criterion A: association with events.
National Register Bulletin 15 — How to Apply the National Register Criteria for
Evaluation provides that "Properties may be eligible for the National Register if they a
are associated with events that have made a significant contribution to the broad patterns
of our history..."
RECOMMENDATION
The Staff of the HPC recommends in favor of the nomination of the South Bend Brewing
Association located at 1636 Lincolnway West, South Bend, Indiana to the National
Register of Historic Places. The Brewery meets Criterion A "for its significance in the
area of industry". It demonstrates a 1900's industry specifically designed for the making
of beer that was distributed locally and aided the areas economy.
As described in the Statement of Significance section of the nomination, the Association
was a triumvirate of local breweries in South Bend and Mishawaka formed in 1903 by
German, Polish and Hungarian immigrants. They built this castle -like structure in 1905
for the express purpose of brewing a beer, which was sold regionally and helped boost
the areas economy.
It is the opinion of HPC Staff that these buildings meet the criteria for eligibility for the
National Register of Historic Places. Staff recommends that the commission send a
favorable ruling to the Mayor of South Bend, Indiana and to the State Historic
Preservation Office.
RLS-Asst.Director
8/24/00
