STAFF REPORT <br />CONCERNING APPLICATION FOR A <br />CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS <br />Application Number: 2000-0828 <br />Property Location: 1512 East Wayne <br />Property Owner: Beverly Wheeler <br />Landmark or District Designation: LHD-EW <br />Rating: C/9 <br />STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE/HISTORIC CONTEXT <br />This residence was built in 1926 by Whitcomb and Keller and sold to Guy <br />DeRhodes in 1927. Guy was the secretary -treasurer for the DeRhodes-Yerrick Motor <br />Company, a dealership for Dodge Brothers Motor vehicles and Graham Trucks, located <br />at 222 N. Lafayette. Mr. DeRhodes resided here until 1935 when he rented the house to <br />Major Edward Bondy, the executive officer for South Bend Military District <br />Headquarters. He rented the house out again in 1938 to Mathias Gabler, master brewer <br />for South bend Brewing Company. Guy DeRhodes sold the house to Donald Adair in <br />1940 who sold the house again four days later to Percy Walsh. Mr .Walsh sold the house <br />in 1941 to John & Theodosia Gonas. <br />John Samuel Gonas Sr., was born in Pennsylvania in 1907, he eventually married <br />Theodosia Bonder and had two sons. John was a judge, he served as St. Joseph County <br />Juvenile Probate Court Judge from 1948 to 1958 and as Indiana Appellate Court Judge <br />from 1959 to 1963 when he retired. Mr. Gonas resided at this address until 1983 when he <br />sold it to James and Lynn Eades, who sold the house in 1985 to Richard and Holly Foley. <br />The Foley's lived here until 1989 when Richard sold his share of the house to Holly. <br />Holly Foley, remarried and became Holly Bocker, she resided here until 1993 when the <br />house was sold to Sandra Fey. Ms. Fey owned the house until 1997 when it was sold to <br />Robert Pickering, who sold the property in 1999 to the current owner, Beverly Wheeler. <br />
