L]
139 KEN HERCEG: In August of 1998 a sample of the stone was sent to the Masonry
140 Stabilization Service Corporation for testing. They did various tests on the sample,
141 which show the limestone is not a candidate for Conserver Consolidation Treatments,
142 which helps consolidate the stone to prevent water from penetrating. However, it is a
143 good candidate for water seal, weather repellants and their recommendation was based on
144 results of the masonry mineralogy test. They further stated that the presence of gypsum
145 and related salts would continue to cause deterioration to the stone as they are alternately
146 wetted by water and allowed to dry out. That is the reason we suggested using the water
147 repellant treatment, we never use a sealant. All of our recommendations are based on the
148 report submitted by the Masonry Stabilization Service Corporation.
149
150 JOANN SPORLEDER: Will the mortar used for tuck -pointing match the existing
151 mortar in color?
152 --
153 KEN HERCEG: The color of the mortar will match the color of the existing mortar
154 and the structure will only receive tuck pointing where needed.
155
156 JOANN SPORLEDER: Will treating the surface with a power wash and water
157 repellent altar the color of the mortar?
158
159 KEN HERCEG: Some of the repellents may darken the stone and mortar slightly
160 until it weathers over time.
161
162 JOANN SPORLEDER: Would the water repellant be applied to the courthouse
163 even if the structure were not cleaned?
164
165 KEN HERCEG: Yes, I would recommend using the repellent if the structure is not
166 cleaned.
167
168 I am under the impression that the Commission is leaning toward not cleaning the
169 building, but is in favor of the tuck -pointing and patching as needed. The question before
170 us still seems to concern the power washing and treatment of the structure.
171
172 GERALD UJDAK: I move that the Certificate of Appropriateness be modified.
173
174 CHERYL GREENE: Before you make a motion Mrs. Sporleder has a question.
175
176 JOANN SPORLEDER: Are there substances, currently penetrating the limestone,
177 which are increasing the rate of deterioration and should be washed off?
178
179 GERALD UJDAK: Joann, I have a degree in biology, all surfaces, including human
180 skin, have foreign substances like molds, you cannot get away from them.
181
182
183
184
4
