STAFF REPORT
CONCERNING APPLICATION FOR A
CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS
Application Number:
Property Location:
2000-0104
516 North St. Joseph
Property Owner: Howard Taylor
Landmark or District Designation: LHD-NSJ
Rating: C/9 Key Number:
Survey Number: 141-597-46359.2
STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE/HISTORIC CONTEXT
George J. Hoffinan purchased lot 66 of Hammond and Whitcomb Addition to South
Bend in 1904 for $800.00. Mr. Hoffinan, a carpenter/contractor, constructed this Queen Anne
style house in 1905 and resided there until 1922. He rented the house to John and Barbara
Suchy in 1923, selling it to them two years later. Mr. Suchy was born in Chicago in 1873 and
married Barbara Novotny in 1896. The couple moved to South Bend in 1902 where John
became an upholsterer. Mr. Suchy died in 1932 at age 59 leaving the house to his wife.
Barbara continued to reside at this address until 1942 when she rented it out to Albert
Thorstenson., a chef. Mrs. Suchy moved to Barron Lake in 1955 where she died three years
later at age 80. Her daughter, Mrs. Genevieve Baumbach, wife of grocer, Anthony Baumbach,
rented the house to various tenants until 1965 when she sold it to William C. Brooks. Mr.
Brooks rented the property out to numerous tenants, eventually leasing it to Howard Taylor, a
local construction worker. Mr. Brooks sold the house in 1979 to Mr. Taylor, who continues to
reside there to this day.
