The garage is detached with two stalls, a hipped roof, <br />stucco walls and two sets of double leaf wood doors with eight light windows. <br />RECOMMENDATION <br />Based on the Historic Preservation Commission's Local Landmark Criteria's adopted by <br />the Common Council, the site, structures and objects at 557 Edgewater has been <br />recommended to the Common Council for designation as a Local Landmark by the <br />Historic Preservation Commission. <br />The building, sites and objects meet the following three criteria: <br />1) Its embodiment of elements or architectural design, detail, material or <br />craftsmanship which represents an architectural characteristic or innovation; <br />2) Its suitability for preservation; <br />3) Its identification with the life of a person or persons of historical significance. <br />The structure fulfills criteria # 1 as an example of a combination of two popular <br />architectural styles, those being the Prairie Style popularized by Frank Lloyd Wright and <br />the American Four Square a popular and totally American style of the 1900's. The <br />building is rated an S /11 in the Indiana Historic Sites and Structures Inventory. <br />The structure fulfills criteria #2 by retention of its overall character, integrity and Prairie <br />and American Four Square architectural features with virtually no alterations. <br />The site and structures fulfills criteria #3 by its association with the extremely affluent <br />real estate developer, Leslie Whitcomb. Mr. Whitcomb had a hand in developing a large <br />portion of South Bend. <br />5 <br />
