STAFF REPORT
CONCERNING APPLICATION FOR A
CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS
Application Number:
Property Location:
1999-00902
1608 Devon Circle
Property Owner: Wellington & Andrea Jones
Landmark or District Designation: LL
Rating: S/11
Survey Number:
141-59-37261
Key Number:
STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE/HISTORIC CONTEXT
Andrew C. Weisburg, owner and manager of the Oliver Hotel Corporation, purchased
lots 19, 20 and 21 of the Jefferson Heights Addition in December of 1924. The Jefferson
Hieghts Addition was eventually replatted, becoming the Tuxedo Park Addition, which
instituted a $20,000.00 building minimum. Mr. Weisburg hired popular architect, Ernest W.
Young, to design this house for them which the resided in until 1935, at which time it was sold
to Ivar Henning. Mr. Henning was the president of the South Bend Bait Company. Ivar
resided in this house until his death in 1950 at which time the property was inherited by his
wife, Helen. Mrs. Henning continued to live there until 1954 when she sold the house to the
South Bend Osteopathic Hospital, Inc. The hospital converted the house into offices for its
staff, and continued to utilize the house until 1975. The hospital began a large expansion
program in 1975 which placed the house in jeopardy, however, the hospital was able to find a
buyer for the building who was willing to move the house from its existing location. The house
was sold to Thomas G. Podell, a local bricklayer and subcontractor for $1,800.00. Mr. Podell
purchased lots eight and nine of of Devon Place and subsequently moved the house to those lots
in 1976. Mr. Podell sold the house to the current owners, Wellington and Andrea Jones, in
1978.
