STAFF REPORT
CONCERNING APPLICATION FOR A
CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS
Application Number: 1999-0924-3
Property Location: 1646 LINCOLNWAY EAST
Property Owner: MARY LOU SANDERS
Landmark or District Designation: LWE-LHD
Rating: C/10 Key Number:
Survey Number: 141-597-43029
STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE/HISTORIC CONTEXT
Arthur J. and Louise Austin built this house in 1900. Arthur Austin was the son of
William Austin, pioneer of St. Joseph County. Arthur and his father purchased this property in
1899, when it was referred to as 1241 Vistula. Arthur Austin, a milk dealer, resided at this
address until 1905 when he sold the house to Elizabeth and E.F. Good. Mr. & Mrs. Good
resided at 1321 Vistula, renting 1241 Vistula to their son, Walter Good. The Good's owned the
house until 1946 when it was sold to Floyd and Edith Cook, who in turn sold it to Elmer
Hedges two years later. Mr. Hedges lost the property the following year in a foreclosure at
which time the property was purchased by Keith Morrison. Mr. Morrison immediately sold the
house to Dewey Emrick. Mr. Emrick owned the house until 1955 when he sold it to Jacob
Resnick. Mr. Resnick sold the house in 1956 to Lawrence and Kathryn Copenhaver. Mr. and
Mrs. Copenhaver resided at this address until 1988 when they sold it to the current owner, Mary
Lou Sanders.
