STAFF REPORT <br />CONCERNING APPLICATION FOR A <br />CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS <br />Application Number: <br />Property Location: <br />Property Owner: <br />1999-1026 <br />1158 Lincolnway East <br />Joseph Rubin <br />Landmark or District Designation: <br />Rating: C/10 <br />LHD-LWE <br />Key Number: 18-7071-2598 <br />Survey Number: 141-597-43003 <br />STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE/HISTORIC CONTEXT <br />Catherine C. Wenger, window of Martin Wenger a pioneering settler of St. Joseph <br />County, purchased this land from Jacob Leer, son of prominent South Bend pioneer, Samuel <br />Leer, in 1889 for $1,000.00. Mrs. Wenger sold the land to Martha G. Loughman, widow of <br />George Loughman, South Bend Mayor from 1884-1888 and president of the Sandage Steel <br />Skein Fabric Roll Protector Company. Mr. Loughman died in 1909. Mrs. Loughman and her <br />daughter, Edith Miller, widow of Osburn Miller, built this house in 1923. They resided there <br />together until 1924 when Mrs. Loughman passed away at age 77. Edith continued to reside <br />there -with -her -son,, George-L—Miller, for -nine more years. Mrs. iviuler also worked for the <br />Fabric Roll Protector Company. Edith miller lived here until 1933 when she moved in with her <br />son, George. George Miller rented the house out to various people for the next 20 years. <br />George operated a men's shop in the liver Hotel for many years, later selling the business to go <br />into real estate. Mr. Miller inherited the house in 1951 when his mother passed away. He <br />continued to own the property until 1962 when he sold it to Fred and Ida Auer. Mr. Auer was <br />an employee of the New York Central Railroad, he retired in 1958. Fred resided here until his <br />death in 1973 at age 76. Ida Auer continued to live at this address until 1993 when she died at <br />age 87. Upon her death her son, Richard, sold the house to Joe and Cynthia Bellina. They <br />owned the property until 1997 when the house was sold to Grover Laudeman III. Mr. <br />Laudeman owned the house until 1999 when he sold it to the current owner, Joseph Rubin. <br />
