Stoops and small patios also are in <br />evidence. Of those porches that have roofs, many have either hip or gable roofs or are covered by the -main roof of <br />the house. Columned porticos, porches with broken pediments or turrets, and other porch forms characteristic of the <br />Period Revival styles are also found in the district. <br />Required <br />Existing or original porches, stoops, patios, and steps, including ,,good Prase Fbinitd <br />handrails, balusters, columns, brackets, tiles and roof decorations Out to Notch screening <br />shall be retained or replace by replicas of the same design and <br />materials when deteriorated beyond repair . Porches and <br />additions reflecting later architectural, styles. and which are <br />important to the building's historical integrity shall be retained. <br />Recommended <br />When enclosing porches for heat conservation or for other' <br />reasons, it should be done in a manner that does not alter the <br />architectural or historical character of the building. Roil .4 <br />Prohibited $014 <br />Front porches, stoops, patios, and steps that are important to the <br />building's style and development shall not be altered or removed. <br />Not Recommended <br />Original Porch Details should not be replaced with materials <br />representing an earlier period or style from the original. <br />E. Mechanical Svstems <br />The majority of the structures within the district have oil or gas <br />heat, and have brick chimneys through the roof. Some houses <br />have one or two window air conditioners. <br />Required <br />Mechanical systems shall be placed in areas that will result in the least possible alteration to the structural integrity <br />and physical appearance of the building. Solar collectors and TV dishes shall be placed at the rear of the property <br />and shielded by shrubbery and landscaping. <br />,Place S"Cernno <br />80+1x0 80iuwa0t <br />o„d cawMns <br />Recommended <br />Window air conditioners and exhaust fans should be installed at the rear or an inconspicuous side window. Original <br />lighting fixtures should be retained whenever possible. <br />Prohibited <br />Holes shall not be cut through wails or roofs in areas that can be seen from the street to accommodate air <br />conditioners or other mechanical equipment. <br />Not Recommended <br />Exterior electrical and telephone cables should not be attached to the street elevations of the buildings. <br />page 45 <br />
