911 Golden <br />Historical Context <br />This property is located on the northeast corner of Golden Avenue and a north/south <br />alley located between Woodward Avenue and Portage Avenue, in South Bend, Indiana. <br />It is described as being the south half of lot 18 Shetterly's 3rd Addition to South Bend. <br />This house was built in 1910 by Frank P. and Charlotte Herrold. Mr. Herrold was an <br />employee of Com Travel, he and his wife resided at this residence until 1914 when they <br />sold the house to Delos M. Coen. <br />Delos M. Coen was born in January of 1883. He married Mildred Spitler in 1910, she <br />died in 1951. The young couple moved to South Bend in 1911 at which time Mr. Coen <br />began working for the Merchants National Bank. In 1944 the bank was consolidated with <br />the City National Bank U Trust Company, two years later Mr. Coen was promoted to <br />Vice President of the newly formed company. He was promoted again in 1951 to Vice <br />Chairman of the board. Mr. Coen was employed in the banking business for 69 years, all <br />the while residing at 911 Golden Avenue. He owned the house until his demise in 1974 <br />at the age of 91. The house was sold that same year by the National Bank and Trust, to <br />Sandra, William and Lois Crachy. Sandra Crachy was a technician with the South Bend <br />Medical Foundation, her father, William Crachy, was a construction supervisor. The <br />family resided here until 1986 when the house was sold to Lawrence A. and Carrie Katz. <br />Larry Katz was the chef at the Summit Club which is located atop the City Center <br />Building. Mr. Katz was eventually promoted to director.' They owned the house until <br />1990 when it was sold to Michael Kremer, an assistant Professor at Notre Dame. Mr. <br />Kremer resided at this address until 1995 when he sold the house to its current owner, <br />Elizabeth Hunt. <br />ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION <br />This is a two story American Four Square style house with Prairie Style attributes. It is <br />square in plan with stucco over brick foundation and an exterior stucco chimney. The <br />walls are covered in stucco with a wood bandcourse and trim. The house has a steeply <br />pitched hip roof with two hip dormers, all covered in asphalt shingles. Its windows are <br />nine over one double hung with drip caps. The house also has diamond shaped dividers <br />with lead muntins located on the front elevation first story windows. It has a wood panel <br />front door with window. The porch nuns the full width of the front of the house with <br />stucco supports and rail, concrete steps and stoop and is enclosed by screens. The house <br />also boasts a one stall garage with a flat roof and parapet wall. <br />
