STAFF REPORT <br />CONCERNING APPLICATION FOR <br />CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS <br />Application Number: 1999-0701-C <br />Property Location: 512 North St. Joseph Street - South Bend IN 46601. <br />Property Owner: Memorial Hospital <br />Landmark or District Designation: North St. Joseph St. Local Hist. Dist. <br />Rating: C-9 Key Number: <br />Survey Number: 141-597-46358.6 <br />Statement of Significance & Historic Context <br />Seth Hammond and Leslie Whitcomb sold lot 67 to Charles Hicks in 1904 for eight - <br />hundred -dollars. Mr. Hicks then built this house between 1904 and 1907 when he sold it to <br />William Moschell for two -thousand four hundred -dollars. <br />Mr. Moschell was associated with Vernon Clothing Company. He was a prominent <br />member of the community and an active member of the Masonic Order. <br />He and his family lived in the house until 1909 when they then moved to Lafayette, <br />Indiana. A year later, in 1910 Mr. Moschell transferred the house into his wife's name. He <br />then died a year later at the age of 48. <br />The surviving wife, Anna Eliza owned the house until 1917 when she gave it to her <br />son Chancellor who owned it until 1919 when he sold it to George M & Grace Longfellow. <br />Mr. Longfellow was an automobile mechanic. He and his wife lived in the house through <br />1922 after which they began renting the house. The property was rental for the next thirty-six <br />years. <br />In December of 1958 following the death of Mr. Longfellow, the widow Grace sold <br />the home to Edward J. Billings who continued to use the house as rental property. The house <br />is now under the ownership of Memorial Hospital. <br />Page: 1 <br />
