ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION <br />This is a two and a half story American Four Square style house. It has a square <br />plan and a quarry face block foundation. The house boasts wood clapboard <br />siding, a flare belt course along the second floor, a rounded corner under the <br />porch, shingled hipped dormers, truncated pyramid roof, boxed eaves, simple <br />frieze board and central chimney. It also has a corner front porch with inset flat <br />roof, wood balustrade, simple architrave, elevated wood deck, block base, <br />tapered box columns, clapboard wall and concrete steps. The house has one <br />over one double hung windows through out the first and second stories and <br />sixteen over one double hung windows in the dormers, all with wood surrounds <br />and caps. It also contains a hexagonal oriel window with molded entablature on <br />the west facade and a full glazed wood entry door and an eight mullioned wood <br />storm door on the front facade. <br />RECOMMENDATION <br />Based on the Historic Preservation Commission's Local Landmark Criteria's <br />adopted by the Common Council, the building at 1818 Lincolnway West has <br />been recommended to the Common Council for designation as a Local <br />Landmark by Historic Preservation Commission. <br />The building meets the criteria in at least three areas: <br />1.) Its embodiment of elements of architectural design, detail, materials, or <br />craftsmanship which represents an architectural characteristic or innovation. <br />2.) Its suitability for preservation. <br />3.) Its identification with the life of a person of historical significance. <br />The building fulfills criteria #1 as an excellent example of a turn of the century <br />American Four Square style residential structure. The building is rated a <br />significant eleven in the Indiana Historic Sites and Structures Inventory. <br />The building fulfills criteria #2 by the integrity of its original construction with <br />virtually no changes to the facade in over 90 years. Its a wonderful and unique <br />example of the many variations individuals used when designing an American <br />Four Square house. <br />The building fulfills criteria #3 by its association with Francis Alward, a <br />prominent figure in local politics. <br />Staff finds that the building meets the criteria for designation as a Local Landmark and <br />recommends that the Commission send such a recommendation to the Common Council. <br />
