human scale district. <br />A stand of various varieties of Oak trees runs from <br />Sunnyside, south of the district to approximately 1630 East Wayne <br />Street. An exciting find,. these trees are native species with <br />size and shape that suggest they were- planted immediately after <br />conclusion of construction. Because the land which became the <br />sunnymede Development in the 1870's was farm land, the idea that <br />the trees are survivors of 'development holds slim possibilities. <br />However, the size of the trees dates them at 80 to 90 years old.. <br />This fact is interpreted to suggest that the Studebaker brothers, <br />Jacob,. F;- and John M., let the trees grow to enhance their <br />subdivision and" business venture. In any case, the number, <br />location and visual affect of ,the trees is significant to the <br />character and should be -preserved. <br />The large trees behind the homes act as a backdrop for the <br />historic homes and add to the ambiance of the historic <br />neighborhood. The effect of the canopy should be maintained with <br />a tree for a tree policy. When -a tree is cut down due to damage, <br />disease or age then another of the same species or an acceptable <br />alternate should be replace it. <br />The street trees present in the neighborhood include Norway <br />Maples (Acer platenoides), Sugar Maples (Acer saccharum), Green. <br />Ash'(Fraxinus pennsylvanica.), White Ash (Fraxinus americana), Pin <br />Oak (Quercus palastrus) and American Sweet.gum (Liquidambar <br />styraciflua). The combination is a nice mixture that should be <br />continued. The planting of Flowering Crabapples and other <br />ornamentals within the tree lawn should be prohibited. <br />Considering the character of East Wayne Street Local Historic <br />District, this practice does not adhere to the, concept of <br />historic,landscape preservation for this.area. <br />The use of hedges, sizable shade trees, ground cover and <br />ornamentals maintain the historic character of East Wayne Street <br />Local. Historic lDistrict. The, historic landscape is the most <br />intact of all the historic districts and should be maintained. <br />Stringent guidelines regarding fences, ground cover materials <br />(wood chips and decorative stone) as well as the number or <br />ornamental and shade trees may need to be regulated to maintain <br />the character and scale of East Wayne 'Street Local Historic <br />District <br />Note* East Wayne Street Local Historic District has a small <br />park area located at the west fork in East Wayn Street that- is <br />not designated as a city park. The vegetation includes two <br />trees that are considered historically significant due to their <br />age. The area includes the following: <br />Black Walnut (Juglans nigra) <br />Chinese Elm (Ulmus parviflora) <br />2 Red Oak (one is significant) (Quercus rubra) <br />Mulberry (significant (Mores alba) <br />page #7 <br />
