Bend, IN. <br />OWNED —Ann McFadden <br />DESIGNATION — LHD-EP <br />RATING — Contributing C/9 <br />STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE/HISTORIC CONTEXT <br />This house was built in 1923 by Whitcomb & Keller, who sold it to Elroy K. & Sabra Powell. <br />Mr. Powell was a traveling salesman, he and his wife resided here until 1926 when they sold <br />the house to Otto A. Pfaff. Mr. Pfaff was the chairman of the Board of Wheelabrator <br />Corporation. He and his wife, Kathleen, resided at this address until 1941 when they rented it <br />to Herman Bailin, president of South Bend Fish Company. Mr. & Mrs. Pfaff sold the house in <br />1945 to Miss Ella Bailin, daughter of Herman, and vice president of South Bend Fish <br />Company. Miss Bailin sold the house five months later to Aaron & Bertha Friedman, operator <br />of a grocery store. Mr. Friedman resided here until his death in 1947. His wife, Bertha, sold <br />the house a year later to Dr. Leslie Bodnar, who lived in the house until 1957 when he sold it to <br />Kenneth Obrecht. Mr. Obrecht was a lawyer for Associate Investment Corp., he sold the house <br />to John R. Sheehan Jr. in 1976. Mr. Sheehan sold the house two years later in 1978 to the <br />current owner, Ann McFadden. <br />PROPOSED CHANGE <br />Applicant is proposing to build a new pitched roof over rear portico to replace existing flat <br />aluminum roof. The new roof would match the pitch of adjacent first story roof. In addition to <br />the roof the applicant is proposing to install new supports with lattice work to provide partial' <br />privacy screening. <br />STANDARDS. <br />The Preservation Guidelines for Edgewater Place Historic District state: <br />b) ....The Guidelines for the Edgewater Place District follow the Rehabilitation Model.... <br />II. Existing Structures <br />II.D.1. Required <br />Existing or original porches and steps, including handrails ... shall be retained or replaced by <br />replicas of the same design and materials when deteriorated beyond repair. Porches and <br />additions reflecting later architectural styles, and which are important to the building's <br />historical integrity shall be retained. <br />II.D.3. Prohibited <br />
