415 West Madison <br />Historical Context <br />This property is located. on the north side of West Madison between North William and <br />North Taylor Streets, in South Bend, Indiana. It is described as_ being the East 112 of lot <br />34 Hendricks and Grants Addition. <br />Lot 34 Hendricks St Grant's Addition was sold to Samuel Barnes, a carpenter, in 1873 <br />for $900.00. Mr. Barnes built this house in 1873, he and his wife resided here until <br />1889 when the house was sold to Leudwig M. Schuell.: Mr._ Schuell moved to South <br />Bend in 1884 to open his own jewelry and eye glass store. Mr. Schuell was a jeweler, <br />watchmaker and optician by trade, his store was located in the Oliver House Block at 107 <br />N. Main Street. He resided at 415 W. Madison, until his death in 1901 when the house <br />was inherited by his son, Edward, his daughters, Lillian and'Susannah and his brother, <br />Herman. <br />Herman Schuell married Alverta Marquis in 1905, they resided in this house until 1949. <br />Mr. Schuell was a salesman for. Scherman-Schaus Motor Company. Edward L. Schuell <br />resided in a portion of this house for about 7 years with his wife, Marguerite Carmany, <br />whom he married in 1907. Edward Schuell was a cigarmaker at C L Goetz in 1906, he <br />later became a representative for Indiana 8Z Michigan Electric Company. Edward died in <br />1936,: leaving.a wife and a son, Franklin. Herman Schuell lived at this address with his <br />wife until his death in 1931. Mrs. Schuell continued to reside there until 1949 when <br />she sold the house to her daughters, Kathryn and her husband Forrest West. Mrs. Schuell <br />moved to Minnesota where she passed away in 1951. Mr. West was an architect with his <br />own firm, Forrest R. West Architect. They lived in this house until 1991 when it was' <br />sold to the current owner, Robert Knecht. Mr. Knecht uses the house as a rental <br />property. Currently it is vacant while under renovation. <br />
