CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS STAFF REPORT <br />APPLICATION -- 1998-0501 <br />PROPERTY -- 1336 East Wayne Street No. <br />South Bend, IN <br />OWNER -- Jennifer & Jim Linder <br />DESIGNATION -- LHD-EWS <br />RATING -- Non -Contributing N/C, <br />STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE/HISTORIC CONTEXT <br />This house was built in 1950 by William and Phyllis Clark who purchased the <br />property from Whitcomb and Keller Inc., in 1949. Mr. Clark was a doctor with <br />the South Bend Clinic, .located at 122 N. Lafayette.- They lived - in the house <br />until 1958 when they sold. it to Leslie and Lydia Andrus. Mr. Andrus was born <br />in Ohio in 1902 and came to South Bend -in.1927 where he married Lydia Rose a <br />few months after arriving. Leslie Andrus was a mechanical,engineer graduate <br />from Purdue University and Lydia Andrus was an education graduate from the <br />National College of Education in Illinois. Mrs. Andrus taught kindergarten in <br />South Bend Public Schools and Mr. Andrus was the Vice President and executive <br />head of the Dust & Fume Control Division of Wheelabrator Corp., form 1951 to <br />1966. He was previously the president .of the Wheelabrator Corp., in Canada. <br />Mr. Andrus sold the house in June of 1984 to the current owners, James and <br />Jennifer Linder and moved into a retirement home where he died five months <br />later. <br />PROPOSED CHANGE <br />Applicant proposes to enclose existing rear screen porch by removing screening <br />and installing sliding glass doors.
