CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS STAFF REPORT APPLICATION -- 1998-0501 PROPERTY -- 1336 East Wayne Street No. South Bend, IN OWNER -- Jennifer & Jim Linder DESIGNATION -- LHD-EWS RATING -- Non -Contributing N/C, STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE/HISTORIC CONTEXT This house was built in 1950 by William and Phyllis Clark who purchased the property from Whitcomb and Keller Inc., in 1949. Mr. Clark was a doctor with the South Bend Clinic, .located at 122 N. Lafayette.- They lived - in the house until 1958 when they sold. it to Leslie and Lydia Andrus. Mr. Andrus was born in Ohio in 1902 and came to South Bend -in.1927 where he married Lydia Rose a few months after arriving. Leslie Andrus was a mechanical,engineer graduate from Purdue University and Lydia Andrus was an education graduate from the National College of Education in Illinois. Mrs. Andrus taught kindergarten in South Bend Public Schools and Mr. Andrus was the Vice President and executive head of the Dust & Fume Control Division of Wheelabrator Corp., form 1951 to 1966. He was previously the president .of the Wheelabrator Corp., in Canada. Mr. Andrus sold the house in June of 1984 to the current owners, James and Jennifer Linder and moved into a retirement home where he died five months later. PROPOSED CHANGE Applicant proposes to enclose existing rear screen porch by removing screening and installing sliding glass doors.
