Concrete block should not <br />be used for anything other than foundations. <br />IV. Safety and Code Planning. <br />A. Safety and Code Plannine,. <br />(1) Required <br />Code requirements shall be complied with in such a manner <br />that the existing character of the building is preserved. <br />(2) Recommended <br />Local code officials should be consulted to investigate <br />alternative life safety measures that will preserve the <br />architectural integrity of the strficture. Variances for <br />historic properties should be investigated: <br />(3) Prohibited <br />Construction of new stairways and elevators that would <br />alter the existing exit facilities or important <br />architectural features and spaces shall be prohibited. <br />(4) Not Recommended <br />Fire prevention equipment should not damage the appearance <br />or fabric of the building. <br />V. General. <br />A. Buildings in'the District should not be demolished. However, <br />where a building poses a threat to the public safety, and <br />demolition is the only alternative, documentation by way of <br />photographs, measured drawings, or other descriptive methods <br />should be made of both the exterior and interior of the building. <br />B. A Certificate of Appropriateness is required before moving any <br />building or structure. The moving of a building within, out of, <br />or into the District is discouraged; however, moving is <br />preferred to demolition. <br />ME <br />
