They rented the house out until 1924 when it was >old to Charles 'P'. <br />& • Edna Bender. Mr. Bender was an assistant Cor.•eman al- Studebaker's Plant #2. <br />He and his wife resided at 553 Edgewater until 1943 when they sold the house <br />to •Aletha ' E. Whi l.r.omb, the' widow of Leslie Whitcomb who had linen a partner in <br />the development. of Edgewater Place Mrs. Whitcomb lived in the houso until <br />1971 when she sold it to the current; owners, Lar•r•y :and'Goorgi.ua DeLauretto <br />PROPOSED CHANGE <br />Applicant i - proposing' to i.nsuall a grouird •level, backyard deck with free <br />standing, wood accent railings. <br />STANDARDS <br />The Preservation Guidelines for Edgewater,Pl.ace Historic District, state: <br />b) ....The Guidelines for the Edgewater Place District follow the <br />Reh:abilitatim► Model.... <br />I. Environment . <br />I.A.I. Required. <br />New plant . m�ater.i.als, fencing, walkways,...shal.l be -compatible with the <br />character of the neighborhood in size, scale, material and color. <br />I.A.3. Prohibited <br />Signs, streetlighting, benelres.:.whieh are out of scale or inappropriate to <br />the neighborhood may not he ui;ed . <br />RECOMMENDATION <br />The rear yard patio deck which has already been conrAructed is entirely <br />obscured from public view by privacy fence which completely conceals all <br />details of the deck. The deck is free— Standing and does not: affeeL any other <br />existing structure in the district.
