crumlish and crumlish
architects, Inc.
September 2, 1997
Historic Preservation Commission of St. Joseph County
County -City Building
South Bend, IN
RE: Masonry Repair and New Doors for Garage at 1055 Riverside Dr.,
South Bend
The existing concrete block parapet wall above the existing garage doors is in
a serious state of disrepair and needs to be reconstructed. The existing
sliding garage doors are too narrow for vehicles and are difficult to secure.
The existing masonry above the door openings will be taken down, cleaned of
mortar and re-laid, upon a new steel beam. The new steel beam will be
concealed behind a replacement mansard rood overhang, similar to the existing
overhang. New steel columns will provide additional support for the new steel
beam. The columns will be concealed with wood trim. New shingles on the
mansard will match the main house roof. A new clay tile coping, to match the
existing, will be installed over the reconstructed masonry parapet.
Two new 9 -foot wide, clad -wood sectional, overhead doors will replace the
three existing barn doors. The overhead doors will have window lites in the
top panel [see existing illustration]. Additionally, a 3 -foot wide, steel,
passage door will be added for access to the garage. There are no other doors
to the garage. A new transom window will be installed above the new passage
door.
• we believe the new garage doors will be harmonious to the existing garage and
not detract from the historic character of the home or the neighborhood.
Sincerely,
(/ (Cr'94
Bwendan Crumlish, NCARB
Architect
2 attachments
•
3215 sugar maple court, suite b south bend, Indiana 46628
219.282.2998
