Harry Barnes, a newcomer to this trade, installed 227 of the
brick paving in this year,.with the remainder of the work being evenly divided
among Hoban & Roach, James Nelson, and another newcomer, Siders & Company, who
performed street work in St. Adalbert's and St. Casimir's Parish.
The 1911, a year during which comparatively little brick paving was
installed, the city engineer's report indicated a nearly even split of this
work between Defrees and Hoban & Roach. The distribution of this work is
interesting. Hoban & Roach's share of thi's work was distributed among five
more or less equally sized jobs while a single large project was awarded to
• Defrees. Although not a hard and, fast rule, the tendency was for Defrees
receive commissions for larger projects with the smaller projects being
awarded to the other contractors in this trade. The projects awarded to Hoban
& Roach in this year could not have exceeded a single block in length for each
project. However, during the era of brick pavement, other contractors were
competitive and often received commissions as large as Defrees's.
