UhlCfIYI Kf1; Ut AFFRUFRIATENESS -STAFF REPORT <br />APPLICATION -- 1996-0911 <br />PROPERTY -- 1215 East Wayne Street <br />South.Bend <br />OWNER -- Bernard & Patricia Diedrich <br />• DESIGNATION -- LHD-EW <br />RATING -- Contributing (C-9) <br />STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE/HISTORIC CONTEXT <br />This Renaissance Revival style dwelling built in 1927 was designed by notable <br />local,Architects Austin & Shambleau for Frank E. Shambleau and his wife Letta. <br />Frank , an autoworker with Studebaker, was the brother of architect N. Roy <br />Shambleau. Letta's mother, Lena Klinghammer also lived here until her death in <br />1932. In 1944 the property was sold to Elbert A. Darnell, owner of Darnell's <br />Drug Store. <br />The building is finished in brick with arch -headed double -hung windows at the <br />first floor which feature an unusual mullion pattern and a low sloped hip <br />roof. Notable features include a stone string course at the sill -line of the <br />second Story windows and iron balconies at the second floor windows. <br />PROPOSED'CHANGE <br />The Owners propose to replace the first story windows with new windows per the <br />documentation provided. Replacement windows are to be exterior aluminum clad <br />wood with mullion inserts custom made to replicate the pattern in the <br />existing. <br />STANDARDS <br />The Standards and Guidelines for the East Wayne Historic District state: <br />II.C.1 - Required <br />Original windows and doors, including sash, lintels,,sills, shutters, <br />• decorative glass, pediments, hoods, and hardware shall be,retained or when <br />deteriorated beyond repair, replaced with units which resembling the original. <br />RECOMMENDATION <br />The replacement windows proposed for this project are custom fabricated Eagle <br />brand with the mullion pattern custom made to replicate the original.
