Brick Streets of Chapin Park and Associated Near Northside <br />HISTORICAL CONTEXT <br />The Horatio Chapin estate.was divided among his children following his death <br />in 1871. Subsequently, the property was platted for suburban residential <br />development beginning in 1890 and 1891. By approximately 1910, the subdivision <br />was built -out assuming its present character, In 1897 most of the streets of <br />Chapin Park were paved in brick with the exception of the Navarre Street which <br />had been previously paved in cedar block and the 300 block of Lamonte <br />Terrace. The section of Lafayette Street from Colfax to Navarre was also paved <br />in cedar block sometime prior to, 1897. The sections of Navarre and Lafayette <br />noted above were repaved in brick in 1901. <br />ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION <br />The streets included in this proposed Landark include' Navar a Street from <br />Main to Portage; Lafayette Boulevard from "G__ K *0 *T^<��r-Ft�'�,00*; Park <br />Avenue from Navarre Street to Riverside Drive; Forrest Avenue from Portage <br />Avenue to Riverside Drive; Lamonte Terrace from Forrest Avenue to 41anum; <br />Marion Street ro Portage Avenue to Main Street;'all inclusive of the curb and <br />intersections contiguous to them. This street network follows a somewhat <br />irregular meandering pattern which responds to the general street grid, the <br />• diagonal of the.old Portage road, now Portage Avenue, and the slightly hilly <br />terrain of the site. The paving is uniformly 3"X4"X5" fired red clay paving <br />bricks with the exception of Park Avenue which has slightly smaller masonry <br />units. Specifications called for 6" gravel base with 2" sand cushion as <br />underlayment to the brick. <br />RECOMMENDATION tt j <br />}., <br />Based on the HPC Local Landmarks Criteria, the Viiidli-', at .5z1 EaSi_ .3outli. <br />Street has been recommended by the Landmarks Committee of the Historic ' <br />Preservation Commission as a Local Historic Landmark. The building meets the <br />criteria in at least four areas. <br />I <br />1.) Its character, interest, or value as part. of the development, heritage, or <br />culture of the City of South Bend, St. Joseph County, the State if <br />Indiana, or the United States of America. <br />2.) Its embodiment of elements of architectural design, detail, materials, or <br />craftsmanship which represents'an architectural characteristic or <br />innovation. <br />3.)
