is Memorandum
April 12, 1996
To: Commission members
From: Standards & Maintenance Committee
Re: 221 West North Shore Drive
The Standards & Maintenance Committee met on April 11 to discuss the COA
application for 221 West North Shore Drive. Members of the Committee present
included: Richard Bullene, Adrian Scott Fine, Catherine Hostetler, and Janeanne
Petrass.
Members discussed the provisions of the COA which include a 2' x 2' skylight,
located at the rear, and the replacement of the east side door. The proposal to
construct a wood deck in the rear has been withdrawn from this COA application.
All members agreed that the skylight would meet the standards and would not be
visible since it is to be located in the rear. The east side entrance door has already
been replaced with a steel door featuring a lunette window at the top and four
vertical panels below (see photo).
The house's Mission style architecture, featuring Prarie and Craftsmen elements, is
• unique to South Bend and the North Shore Drive Historic District. The chosen
replacement door is not "in -keeping" with this architectural style and is an
acharacteristic feature.
Committee members suggests that either the door be removed and replaced with a
more suitable door type or an appropriately, styled screen door be added.
Historically a screen door would have be located. at this lype of entrance primarily
to provide for ventilation and increased energy efficiency. The installation of a
screen door would effectively conceal the existing door and maintain the integrity
of the architecture. Examples of appropriate screen door designs are provided.
0 asf/04/12/96 10:01 AM
