CERTIPICATE OP APPROPRIATENESS STAFF REPORT <br />• APPLICATION -- 1996-0319 <br />PROPERTY -- 24888 Old Cleveland Rd. <br />South Bend, IN <br />OWNER -- Charles Spiher <br />DESIGNATION -- Local Landmark <br />RATING -- Outstanding (0/13) <br />STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE HISTORIC CONTEXT <br />This Greek revival house features an Italianate Porch. The oldest portion of <br />the house was originally constructed circa 1855 by or for Aaron Miller. A <br />portion at the rear was apparently relocated from the hill behind the house. <br />The building was constructed from timber cut on the site. After the death of <br />Aaron's widow, Mary, their son, Aaron assumed ownership. At his death the <br />property was willed to a boy who had lived with the family. The farmhouse and <br />its outbuildings appear in an illustration in the 1875 Atlas. <br />PROPOSED CHANGE <br />The owner proposes to construct a wood board fence approximating that shown in <br />the 1875 Atlas along the Cleveland Road frontage of the house. The gate, <br />locations will be established to serve the present use of the site. <br />• STANDARDS <br />The Preservation Guidelines and Standards for Local. Landmarks state: <br />Group B <br />C.2. Construction and Style - All work should be done in the architectural <br />style and in a technique compatible with that of the original structure..... <br />C.3. Materials - Additions and improvements involving any new material in the <br />building should be of the same material as the original. It should be the same <br />size and texture. An alternative material may be allowed if it duplicates the <br />original. <br />RECOMMENDATION <br />The proposed fence is consistent with the historical evidence available and <br />represents a valuable reconstruction of a previously destroyed site feature. <br />Staff recommends approval of this application. <br />David B.
