CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS STAFF REPORT <br />PROPERTY -- 1077 Riverside Drive <br />South Bend, IN <br />OWNER -- Mary Hendriksen & Dwight King <br />DESIGNATION -- RSD-LHD <br />STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE/HISTORIC CONTEXT <br />The house at 1077 Riverside Drive was built c. 1925 for <br />Harriette E. and Dora I. Keller, sisters of Fred W. Keller <br />partner in the prominent real estate company of Whitcomb <br />and Keller. This Colonial Revival style house is rated <br />S/11 in the Indiana Historic Sites and Structures Survey <br />and is considered to be in excellent condition. <br />PROPOSED CHANGE <br />The owners propose the following changes: <br />1. Transplant a rhododendron from the rear of the garage <br />to area of dying rhododendron near screened porch. <br />2. Remove sapling that is interfering with the dogwood. <br />3. Transplant redbud sapling near lilacs to corner of <br />screened porch on Riverside Drive. <br />4. Remove two lowest branches of hemlock extending over <br />sidewalk (Custom & Moore to do work). <br />5. Replace backdoor light with light matching original <br />lanterns. <br />STANDARDS <br />Standards: I.B.1."New site work should be based upon <br />actual knowledge of the past appearance of the property <br />found in photographs, drawings and newspapers. New site <br />work should also be appropriate to existing surrounding <br />site elements in scale type and appearance." <br />RECOMMENDATION <br />The proposed changes 1-4 are minor landscaping site <br />amenities that are appropriate to the existing site <br />elements, staff recommends approval. <br />Proposed change 5 would involve the removal of a <br />non -historic light fixture and replacement with one more <br />compatible with the original fixtures. Staff recommends <br />conceptual approval with the proposal referred to the <br />Standards and Maintenance Committee for approval once the <br />owners have selected the specific fixture. <br />CAA <br />2-13-95 <br />
