t
historic preservat i on comm issi
p on
of south bend and st. joseph county
ROOM 1123 COUN'T'Y CITY BUILDING
south bend, indiana 46601 (219) 235 -9798
Carl Littrell
Division of Engineering
Department of Public Works
13th Floor County -City Building
South Bend, IN 46601
April 12, 1995
Dear Mr. Littrell:
I am writing in regard to the Certificate of Appropriateness application filed
by the Department of Public Works for the replacement of streetlights on
Riverside Drive in the Riverside Drive Local Historic District.
The work outlined in the - application is appropriate by the standards of the
Historic Preservation Commission with the exception of one' item, the proposed
removal of the only remaining original cast iron post in the Riverside Drive
District. The streetlight at 916 Riverside Drive numbered 14 on the drawings
attached to the application is a c.1915 Park View Streetlight Post
manufactured by the George Cutter Company of South Bend. This streetlight has
a historical significance to the Riverside Drive Streetscape and to the
history of South Bend. I cannot allow the approval of its removal. My personal
recommendation to the Historic Preservation Commission will be to deny this
portion of the application.
My second concern with the proposal was the retention of the removed poles and
luminaires for use elsewhere in the City. I understand from the HPC staff that
it is your intention to store these items, however this was not part of the
Certificate of Appropriateness application. I intend to make their retention
part of the approval of the application.
I hope we are able to settle the issue of streetlighting in South Bend's
Historic Districts in the interest of all parties as soon as possible.
Sincerely,
l7vvv L /7 . awn
J n H. Oxian, President
Historic Preservation Commission
JHO /caa
