CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS STAFF REPORT
PROPERTY -- 1235 East Wayne South
South Bend, IN
OWNER -- Lisa Williams
DESIGNATION -- EWS -LHD
STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE /HISTORIC CONTEXT
This Tudor Revival style house was constructed in 1927 as part of Whitcomb &
Keller's Sunnymede Addition. The house is in good condition and was rated C/9
in the Indiana Historic Sites and Structures Survey.
PROPOSED CHANGE -
The owner proposes to remove the chain link fence in the rear yard from the NE
corner of the garage to the east property line. It is to be replaced with a
Michigan Pine split rail fence to match the existing feature. The fence is to
have a top rail height of 26" and a.40" height to the top of the posts. The
fence will include a 36 "X35" wood gate with arced top.
STANDARDS
I.B.1. Recommended - New site work should be based upon actual knowledge of
the past appearance of the property as found in photographs, drawings, and
newspapers. New site work should also be appropriate to existing surrounding
site elements in scale, type, and appearance.
Prohibited - No changes may be made to the appearance of the site by
removing... fencing... before evaluating its importance to the property's
history and development.
RECOMMENDATION
The owner's proposed fencing is appropriate to the existing site elements and
the extant chain link fencing has no significant importance to the property's
history and development. Staff recommends approval.
CAA
4/10/95
