CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS STAFF REPORT <br />PROPERTY -- 1093 Riverside Drive <br />South Bend, IN <br />OWNER -- Marsha Stevenson <br />DESIGNATION -- RSD -LHD <br />STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE /HISTORIC CONTEXT <br />This Prarie influenced American 4- square house was built c. 1910 probably by <br />Ernest Young. Its walls are a combination of stucco, wood shingle, and wide <br />clapboard. This house is rated S /12 on the Indiana Historic Sites and <br />Structures Survey and is in excellent condition. <br />PROPOSED CHANGE <br />The owner proposes to remove the wood deck at the rear of the house which was <br />added in the late 1980's. The owner proposes to plant a magnolia tree where <br />one was removed to construct the deck and replant grass. The owner also <br />proposes to plant two lilac bushes near the kitchen windows along the back of <br />the house. <br />STANDARDS <br />I.B.2. Recommended: New site work should be based upon actual knowledge of the <br />past appearance of the property found in photographs, drawings, and <br />newspapers. New site work should also be appropriate to existing surrounding <br />site elements in scale, type and appearance. <br />RECOMMENDATION <br />The removal of the non - historic deck, planting of a magnolia tree where one <br />was known to have been, and the planting of two lilac bushes at the rear of <br />the property meets the criteria set forth in the standards.
