The following are the modifications for which we seek
approval from the Historic Preservation Commission:
1. Remove redwood deck (c. 1960), which is slowly sinking
down the river bank.
2. Run a dogear picket fence, exactly the same in style to
the fence located along the eastern side of the yard, from the
rear of the garage over to the western property line. We need
the fence in order to keep our three little children from going
down to the river, once the deck is removed. The fence will have
a locking gate in it, so that we can have access to the river.
3. Remove old cement steps presently found beneath the
deck (they have broken apart due to bank erosion). These steps
run down from the yard level to the terraced level above the
river.
4. Replace the old steps either with railroad tie steps
or, if feasible, cement steps, in exactly the same location as
the present steps.
5. If necessary, cut down the oak tree which presently
rises up through the middle of the redwood deck. Due to bank
erosion and the angle at which the tree is growing, many of the
roots are exposed. The tree cutter did not know whether the tree
can remain viable for much longer; due:to the way the deck sits
just above it, he wanted to examine the'tree'once the deck.was
removed before giving an opinion. Hence, it may not be necessary
to cut the tree down, and we would certainly rather not'cut it
down, but in order that we not have to come back before the
Commission on this issue, we ask for the approval to cut the tree
down if it is necessary.
6. Build a railroad tie retaining wall at the point at the
top of the bank (about 2' behind the garage). We would extend
the retaining wall from the eastern property line over to the new
steps. If we are able to save the oak (see # 5), we would not be
able to run a retaining wall from the stairs over to the western
property line. If the oak needs to be cut down, we would ask
approval to run the retaining wall from the western side of the
stairs over to western property line.
7. Plant the area shaded green.'ori the attached diagram in::
accordance with the landscape plan of F0egley Landscape. (PLEASE.
NOTE: The landscape plans. show; a :deE i;gn for.:a . new deck ;:to
replace..the. present deck.. :We have:Oecided::not to build :a deck of
the type suggested in the designi:'and we'are NOT at the,.present
time requesting approval for the building of any new deck.)
