historic preservation commission
of south bend and st. joseph county
ROOM 1123 COUNTY CITY BUILDING
south bend, Indiana 46601 (219) 235-9798
To
Motion for Certificate of Appropriateness for 1081 Riverside Drive Vef)D40K
f.A' V1 J+C-$
"I am making a motion here that if that flange is cut down so that if it's
36" wide it should be no wider than 25" at the sidewalk and taper back to
wherever you want it to go along where that... I don't know how far back that
went, I've forgotten what he read... Where that 8" offset is ... that that come
to a point back there and be only that wide. And then if it's filled in with
brick, that's what I assume is still in somebody's mind about the finish ... It
could be cobble stones, it could be almost anything, but its got to be light
colored and its got to be something that hassomerelationship to that
concrete strip in color so that it isn't a little funny looking red strip over
there by itself. But I will only make the motion for that if that is cut down
to this reasonable size that I just stated and you can get it off of there ,
(the tape recording) and that furthermore not a thing is to be touched in that
shrubbery or trees... any of that at this time, as far as the Commission is
concerned, we are protecting those trees and shrubs and we intend to continue
to. I believe that my motion doesn't necessarily have it as part of this, but
I believe that you've got to pay for a thorough survey with those stakes every
few inches and find out where you lot line is. That seems to me to be a
reasonable suggestion, that's all that is, a parenthetical suggestion... To
actually not bestanding out there trying to decide that because it can't be
decided like that, there is no such thing. And so actually be serious about a
survey. What you've had so far is not a survey. That is not what's going on
here at all. So have yourself a survey so that it is a legal line and know
what you are talking about before you ever come in here to talk to us about
any of that, either one of you for that matter, you know, about taking them
out or moving them or anything else. Let them alone. Maybe they'll grow high
enough, who knows. But keep that strip small and insignificant and as much
like the concrete that you didn't pour at the beginning and no wider in flare
than I talked about ... about 18 to 20 inches at the sidewalk ... 25 inches that's
right I'm sorry, 25 inches." Commissioner Bullene asked how Commissioner
Choitz got those dimensions. She replied, "Well, at the back, it's eight
inches that I want in, and I want eight inches at the front. I just simply
want the thing trimmed down eight inches or there about. Certainly I'd be
laying out a hose or something to make sure I liked what I saw, but it can't
be any wider than that at either end ... toward their property line ... that it
has to be within something that would give it a little symmetry toward the
other side of the pad there." Commissioner Bullene inquired of Mr. Talley how
that dimension related to the actual curb cut. Mr. Talley replied it would be
on the side of 1077. It would make the driveway not as wide as the curb cut,
by eight, inches. Commissioner Bullene stated that seemed reasonable.
