r <br />• <br />CERTIF.ICATE0F _APPROPR_IATENESS._STAFF_._R PORT: <br />PROPERTY -- 726 Arch Avenue <br />South Bend, IN 46601 <br />pWNER. -- Paul Richardson <br />DES_IGNATIQN, -- Edgewater Place LHD <br />STATEMENTOF_S_IGNIFICANCE/H_ISTOR_IC CONTEXT, <br />The house at 726 Arch Ave. is located in the Edgewater Place LHD <br />and has been given the rating of C/9 on the Indiana Historic <br />Sites and Structures Inventory. This Dutch Colonial style house <br />was built in 1923. The house is largely unaltered with the <br />exceptions of wrought iron porch supports and aluminum storm <br />windows and door. The exterior of the house is clad in wood <br />( cedar) shingles. <br />PROPOSED_ CHANGE. <br />The project consists of wrapping the exterior of the house in <br />double 4 (four) inch vinyl siding. Windows and other detail will <br />be left uncovered. <br />STANDARDS. <br />District standards state (II.A.1.) "Existing exterior building <br />materials shall be retained." (II.A.2.) "...vinyl siding may be <br />used when it is the only feasible alternative to maintaining the <br />original surface material." (II.A.3.) "Wood siding shall not be <br />resurfaced with new material which is inappropriate or was <br />unavailable when the building was constructed..." <br />RECOMMENDATIONS. <br />The staff recommends that this proposal be denied. The district <br />standards clearly state a preference for the maintenance of <br />original construction materials. It is the opinion of the staff <br />that this house is in very good condition and that the existing <br />exterior is worthy of preservation. <br />C. Frederick <br />7-1-93 <br />• <br />
