QER.T_Ir ICATE OF ARPROPRIA ENESS STAFF REPORT
...............................................................................................................................................................................................................................
PROPERTY -- 944 Riverside Drive ................................................
South Bend, IN 46616
OWNERS -- Dave Betson
....................................
Dr53GN_A_T.I.ON. --- Riverside Drive LHD; Chapin Park NRHD
S. -TA T.E.M.5 N T O......_S_I_GN.I,F.ICANCE/y_IST.OR_I_G....._CONTEXT.
944 Riverside Drive is located a.n the portion of the Riverside Drive LHD
which is also part of the Chapin Park NRHD. This Dutch Colonial Revival
~tyle house was designed by W.W. Schneider, a significant local architect,
for Charles and Stella Drummond in 1903. Mr. Drummond was an attorney and
served on the Board of Education from 1916--1920. In 1923 William "Riley"
Hinkle purchased 944 Riverside Drive. Mr. Hinkle was the owner of the
Hinkle Motor Company, a local Ford dealership, and he served as the 18th
mayor of the City of South Bend from 1930--1935.
RED P 0.S E.D....._C H ANS.E.
Replacement of rear and side existing metal storm doors with Grisham Steel
security storm doors (model # SD102) that match the security storm already
Din place on the front entrance door.
STANDARDS.
District standard (2,C,2) states " If new sash and doors are used, the
existing or original materials, design, and hardware should be used. When
metal storm windows and doors are used they should be painted, anodized, or
coated to match the existing".
O.M.M.E.ND.A.13
It is the staff's recommendation that this proposed change be approved by
the HPC. The staff feels that the Grisham Steel security storm door model
SD133 is more appropriate stylistically to the house. Staff suggestions
were made to the owner. However, Mr. Betson continues to prefer model
SD102 because it matches the existing security storm on the front of the
house.
A. Kotzbauer
1-11-93
c:
